Hard to Find Antique Art Wells Glazes pieces in any color, but especially Old Roman 6\" side / bread and butter plates in light melon yellow - a set of 2. When will you get a chance at another collectors? These plates, which is typical of many Wells Art Glaze pieces, has some glaze blotchiness - it was designed to look like it was made in an art studio. Many pieces came out with even glazes but some have unevenness which was intentional. Art Wells glazes were made in the early 1930\'s - the art deco era of pottery. The first four colors of Wells Art Glazes were leaf green, french rose, melon yellow, and burnt sienna (aka rust) and they are the standard Art Glazes. Wells is the dominate shape, but other shapes received the same glazes and often the same marking. Leaf green, rust, and rose, a.k.a. peach, have been found on OvenServe casseroles and under plates. Old Roman was developed in 1928 and was made primarily in the green and a light yellow glazes commonly used in the Depression era. In the article \"Old Roman Dinnerware\" by Jeff Kolodey appearing in The Dish Vol. 13, No. 2, a patent date of an Old Roman plate is revealed as March 5, 1929.
The flatware is very similar to the Newell shape except it has added embossing along the rim. Teacup, sugar and creamer were specially created for Old Roman. The square plate comes from the Wells shape. It was given the heavy decorative embossing, but not the familiar rope edge that originated with the Newell shape.
Measurement for each plate is 6\" across.

Condition: Very good antique preowned condition on these plates. No cracks and minimal crazing. One plate is chip free. The other has an underside chip. Common factory production issues present on these plates with differences in the yellow glaze color, sand bumps, glaze pops, and glaze skips - all common with factory production back in the day! Fun to see how far pottery production has come along in the past 100 years. Very good antique condition overall. See all pictures.
