Gabriel the Trumpeter in Art:
- John Wycliffe’s 1382 tract ‘ Eccleasiae Dominio’ - Armenian Art, 1455, manuscripts with Gabriel and horn. - John Milton’s, 1667, ‘Paradise Lost
- these renditions are painted in the manner of Fra Angelico, a Dominican Friar, known for his religious artwork of the early Renaissance Period.
Gabriel in the Bible: - Gabriel is the heavenly messenger ( Angel) who interpreted the prophet Daniel’s vision of the ram and the goat.. - Gabriel again appears to Daniel after the prophet prayed for his people of Israel. - Gabriel in the New Testament, announces the births of John the Baptist and Jesus.
The name Gabriel means ‘ strong or mighty man of God”. Gabriel’s chief role was to proclaim the coming of the Messiah. This is evident in both Daniel’s prophecy and the birth of Jesus.
