Gus Hardin - Probably because there is no high-profile market for white blues singers, a number of fine blues-style vocalists (Brenda Lee, Delbert McClinton, Terri Gibbs, Con Hunley, Sheila Andrews, etc.) often end up in country music. there, their reception has generally been cooler than their talents deserve, mostly, because country fans understandably are more interested in their favorite kind of music than in blues or a hybrid of blues and country. But country fans should look again at these singers, because their music often supplies as much grit and guts as country does. As example is Gus Hardin\'s new LP, \"Fallen Angel\" (RCA). Any woman named Gus can be expected to exhibit strength, and Hardin\'s voice doesn\'t disappoint. The problem is the usual one of direction. producer Rick Hall, best-known as a great producer of pop and rhythm & blues, has tried two tacks here: some contemporary-styled country arrangements and some much bluesier pop things. He can hardly be blamed for trying the former, since that seems more immediately commercial, but the latter is more musically satisfying, because it seems closer to Hardin\'s musical essence.
