The Metropolitan Opera\'s premiere of the Kurt Weill-Bertolt \"Rise and Fall of the City of Mahagonny\" will be televised Tuesday on \"Live from the Met,\" 7 p.m., Channel 12. Conceived as a chamber opera in 1927, \"Mahagonny\" concerns a mythical American community founded by three escaped criminals, with the \"Do-As-You-Like-Bar\" at its core. It is a hard cynical view of a culture in which the only truth is money. Olin Downes\' original New York Times review found \"Mahagonny\" a \"clever and savage skit on the degeneration of society, the triumph of sensualism, the decay of art.\" Photo measures 8 x 10 inches. Photo is dated 11-25-1979.
