It’s anexample of an engineering conceptwell known in racing: maximumhorsepower developed withoutincreasing displacement.In essence, the XS500’s enginedoes its job more efficiently. Thevalves are an example of this. A con-ventional four-stroke twin has fourvalves. The eight-valve design pro-vides greater valve area and in-creased breathing capability. Eachphase of the four-stroke cycle isaccomplished more efficiently: Thecombustion chamber is more com-pletely filled with fresh fuel duringthe intake stroke and burned gasesare scavenged more efficientlyduring the exhaust stroke. That’swhy the XS500 is more powerfulthan any conventional four-stroketwin, without being larger.The XS500’s engine also has ahigher rpm capability than a con-ventional four-stroketwin. A com-parison of thevalves reveals this(see illustration). 30 mmis the diameter of a typicalfour-stroke valve. 24 mm is thediameter of the XS500’s valves.That’s an important advantage. Alarger valve weighs more, and floatsmore readily at high rpm. A smallervalve, like the XS500’s, doesn’t havethis problem. That’s why the XS500can redline at 9,000. There’smore useable power.The combustion chambers (as theengine cut-away shows) are morehemispherical in shape than thoseof a conventional four-stroke. And,as engineers will tell you, the hemi-spherical combustion chamber is theideal shape. The twin 38mm MikuniXS 500 valveConventional500cc twinvalveLess mass meansless power drop-offat high rpmthe power forthis engine with good fuel economy.And because the XS 500 sengine is small yet powerful, it canbe fitted on a frame that’s a directdescendant of the world-famousYamaha 350 roadracer.
