Mountain View, California -- A NASA Earth Resources Aircraft camera view of Talkeetna Village (upper left) on the right bank of the Suisitna River. The Village is about 60 miles south of Mt. McKinley, about 80 miles north of Anchorage, and about 190 miles south of Fairbanks. The photo was made on infrared film by a 6\" focal length aerial camera on June 23, 1974, in connection with a series of stratospheric particle sampling missions. The flights were made by a high altitude research aircraft (a Lockheed U-2) operated by the NASA Ames Research Center, Mountain View, California. The scientific data gathering missions were made from Eielson Air Force Base near Fairbanks, Alaska. Vegetation appears dark in the photo. Deep ponds appear black and the shallower, sediment laden rivers show in lighter shades. The Talkeetna River is at the top with the Sheep River joining it at the upper right. The stony outcroppings of Bald Mountain (elevation 3,600 feet) show up as grey at right center. Roads and the Talkeetna airstrip (upper right) appear white. The Alaska Railroad is seen as a light stripe at the far left. The photo area, about 18 miles square, covers some 325 square miles. Photo measures 10 x 8 inches. Photo Is dated 1974. PHOTO FRONT
