1974-76 posterThis is a campaign poster for an unsuccessful run for the U.S. Senate by Ramsey Clark, who had been Attorney General of the United States under Lyndon Johnson, where he used the office to advance the cause of civil rights in America.Subsequent to holding that office, he ran for the U.S. Senate twice. This poster is undated, so I don’t know which campaign it was used for, but in 1974 he won the Democratic nomination for the office, but was defeated in that November’s election by the incumbent Senator Jacob Javits. In 1976, Clark ran again, but this time he was beaten in the Democratic primary by two legendary New York politicians, Bella Abzug and Daniel Patrick Moynihan.Throughout this period, Ramsey Clark was one of the country’s most prominent critic of the Vietnam War, and he later became famously controversial by serving as the lawyer for many leftwing causes and defendants. The poster measures 18 x 24 inches in size. It has been stored while rolled for several decades, and is still in Very Fine, nearly new condition. It has a small credit line which notes that the Campaign Director of the Ramsey Clark for U.S. Senate Committee was Victor Navasky, who was well-known as Editor and then Publisher for 27 years of The Nation, the influential liberal magazine.The poster will be shipped rolled, in a mailing tube._gsrx_vers_1426 (GS 9.0.3 (1426))
