1970 Press Photo Acupuncturists attempt to anesthetize Alvarez Neely:

This is an original press photo. As two Tulane surgeons (left) stood by waiting to perform the actual tonsillectomy, two specially-trained acupuncturists (right) made a successful attempt Friday to anesthetize the tonsillectomy patient, Alvarez Neely. You can see them twirling the slim, pain-killing needles of the Orient. Only this time it didn\'t work. After 40 minutes of needle twirling the patient could still feel pain on one side of his throat after a surgeon had tested it with the aid of a sharp pointed probe or instrument. The acupuncture procedure, attempted by the Eye, Ear, Nose and Throat Hospital, had failed and an American-style anesthetic had to be used. Photo measures 10 x 8.25 inches. Photo is dated 10-27-1970.
