450 Honda Super Sport (CB-450 K2)SUPER SPORTY\' 4 ’ROADRURNERMr. Honda’s 450 low-piper is an engineering delight builtfor the enthusiast who knows what’s happening.THE JAPANESE HAVE longbeen known for the “buildingthe better mousetrap” syndrome. This has enabled them to becomethe leaders in almost every field theyenter. Toyota in cars, Sony in TV,Akai in tape recorders and Honda inmotorcycles. In this respect, whatSony is to TV, Akai is to tape re-corders and Toyota is to cars, theHonda 450 Super Sport is to motor-cycles.Getting off to a bad start in theoriginal CB-450 version, Honda tookthe hint—poor sales—and revampedit completely. Everything was up-graded—the motor, frame, suspen-sion and gearing. The bike also wentthrough many design changes result-ing in the current version which isreally groovy, almost the epitome offine, dynamic styling. The most important singular fea-ture of this superior machine is themuch acclaimed, much talked aboutand much written about 444cc 4-stroke double overhead cam twincylinder, ultra refined powerplant.Aside from the double overhead camarrangement, the engine has plentyof other progressive features.Valves are of the torsion springtype as opposed to the conventionalspring type. This system has provedto be ideal—trouble free and highlyefficient. The only limitation hereis in adjustment. The setting screws—the tolerances are set from theoutside—are touchy. You need onehand on the screwdriver and one onthe wrench holding the outer nut.Tightening the nut will sometimescause the inner screw adjustment toslip and the whole magilla has to bereset. Then too, with one hand onthe screwdriver and one manipula-ting the wrench, what’s to hold thefeeler gauge to adjust the space tol-erances. Many shops make this a 2-man operation.Another minor shortcoming is thenecessity of removing the carbs andthe tank as well as two access coversto adjust the valves. As stated before, however, these are minor and whenyou consider the superior mechani-cal performance of this set up, asmall price to pay.The 450 engine puts out a strong43 horses at 9000 rpm. Bore andstroke is a 70 x 57.8mm. The shortstroke allows plenty of revs throughthe gears. Compression ratio is 9 to1. The intake valves are really big, another plus factor. The intakevales measure 1 3/8 inches and theexhaust valves measure 1 3/16-in-ches. Valve float is kept at a mini-mum because of the highly efficienttorsion bar valve spring system. Thecamshaft valve actuating mechanismis driven by a long resilient drivechain kept at constant tension withthe aid of guide rollers and by aspring loaded tensioner adjustedfrom the outside.Main bearings of this engine totalfour in number, each bearing acaged roller held by pillow blocksin the upper portion of the crank-case. Four roller bearings keep vi-brations to a minimum. Primarydrive is off a small gear from thecrankshaft rotating the gearbox mainshaft, through a large clutch gear. The friction clutch is of the wetmultiple-disc type, housing sixpowerful springs. The carburetors on the 450 arereputed to be the finest ever in-vented and superior in many waysto other carbs in general use. Theyare of the constant velocity vacuumpiston type. Here is the basic operational prin-ciple behind these carbs. As the pis-ton in the engine begins its intakestroke, the intake valve opens. Avacuum is created and a mixture ofvaporized gas is drawn into the com-bustion chamber. At minimum throt-tle openings air is ingested by the...
