This is an original press photo. Aragarcas, Goiaz State, Brazil. A band, made up of members of the Xavantes Brazilian Indian tribe, performs for visitors at the Salesian Mission near here. The mission\'s fathers have taken to educating the Indians, who according to the country\'s Interior Ministry, have declined in number recently. When Brazil was discovered in 1550, the Indians numbered more than a million. Today there are about 90,000, 18,000 less than 20 years ago. The ministry has blamed widespread poisoning, shooting by persons hoping to get Indian land, disease and general effects of civilization for the decline in Indian population over the past two decades.Photo measures 10.25 x 8inches.
