St. Paul taking fire from shore batteries in Vietnam The U.S.S. St. Paul, cruiser of the U.S. 7th Fleet, was straddled by fire from communist shore batteries off Cong Phu, North Vietnam, when this picture was taken by a Navy photographer. The picture was released yesterday by the Navy at Saigon. A straddled target usually is hit within the next shot or two. The cruiser received superficial damage, the Navy reported. The ship was on a mission of shelling a railroad yard when the enemy shore batteries found the range. Plumes of smoke from the near misses were erupting from the water. The cruiser had revenge. Fire from the St. Paul destroyed one enemy gun position and damaged others. Ship to shore firing from Navy vessels has frequently been used effectively in the current war.
