1967 MLK Protest March Chicago Vietnam Anti War Press Photo State St & Wacker Dr:
$23.50

This sale is for an original Chicago Sun-Times Press Photo which was used in the March 26, 1967 issue of the Chicago Sun-Times with the caption "Parade participants crowd into State Street for start of peace march." The back of the photo has a cropped version of the photo which appeared in the Chicago Sun-Times, stamped with the date of publication "Mar 26, 1967". This would mean the photo was most likely taken the day before on March 25, 1967. The caption onthe back mentions the crowds on State Street for the start of the march. In the upper left hand corner you can see the Wacker Drive street sign, so you know this is at Wacker and State in Chicago. The marquee of the Shangri-La restaurant is visible at the top of the photo. The Shangri-La restaurant was located at 222 N. State Street, which was south of Wacker Drive, so it appears that this photo was taken on the west side of State Street looking southbound at Wacker Drive. Checking the internet I found several mentions of a Peace March against the war in Vietnam in Chicago on March 25, 1967. This march was reported as starting at Wacker Drive and State Street and walking down State Street and Wabash Ave to the Chicago Coliseum. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr led the march and this was reported to be the first time Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr had participated in an anti-war march. The march went to the Coliseum where Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. addressed the crowd. This photo measures approx. 8-1/8" x 11-1/8". Some of the protest signs visible (or partially visible) in this photo read "Abolish the Draft", "Teachers for Peace", "War on Poverty Not People", "Bring the GIs Home", "Thou Shall Not Kill", "Join the Mobilization to End the War in Vietnam Saturday, April 15", etc. I can see a few men wearing military hats that read "Vets for Peace in Vietnam". The photo is in good, used condition - this was an actual photo used to prepare the March 26, 1967 Chicago Sun-Times article and shows wear - the newspaper clipping was glued on the back and that left wrinkles along the right, left, lower and upper parts of the photo (to the sides of where the newspaper clipping is glued) (See scans attached to the sale to see the wrinkles/waves) - there are a few small creases along the bottom edge - the corners have some small creases - there are a few small creases near the top edge - "Vietnam war - 1967 - Demonstrations CHGO Area Against" is written on the back - the back has some discoloration / glue residue - there are a few small creases. A NICE PIECE OF ANTI-WAR FROM AN IMPORTANT PEACE MARCH IN CHICAGO!Ground Advantagepostage is $5.00. Check out my other sales for a few anti-Vietnam handbills from 1967 and 1968.
