Once again, he wasgreat in the 250cc events, but his abilityROAD RACING:DICK MANNMATCHLESS AND YAMAHACROCKETT, CALIFORNIAThe 12-year veteran again proved that heis the master on the road race courses thathold the national events. His two wins onthe big bike and his national lightweightwin on the 250cc job rate him as the onlyrider to ever win both types in one season.Add to this his runaway win on the light-weight at Daytona from the back of thepack, and you have the best in America onthe pavement. The only question yet un-answered. regarding Dick’s road racingability, is just how good he would beagainst the European riders who make roadraces a full-time habit.Again Mann was the only self-tunedrider in the national winner’s circle thisyear. He did receive assistance in the 250cccategory, but was on his own in otherevents.on the mile tracks shot him to the top thisyear. In the two national mile track events, hemet and either defeated or led the best inthe entire nation. His from-last-to-first heatrace ride at Springfield, Illinois against themajority of the best gave first indicationsof things to happen. It was all Lawwill inthe feature until he was forced to the pitswith oil pump problems. In his last appear-ance across the line, he was still wideningthe gap.Mert won the first national of his careerat Sacramento where he reversed his plan, and rode behind the leaders until late inthe race. He went on to take the lead andwin with the same ease that he displayedearlier at Springfield.Lawwill had his finest year in competi-tion, winning half-miles, short tracks andmile events. He also scored high in manyroad races to rank him as one of the bestall-around riders in America today. Staunchbacking from the Milwaukee factory andcoaching from his sponsor Dud Perkinsrate this rider high on the list for ’66.OUTSTANDING FIRST YEAR EXPERT:DAN HAABYBSA and MATCHLESSTORRANCE, CALIFORNIALast year Dan took the amateur awardgoing away. He does the same this year asa first-time rider on the national scene anda weekly competitor on the half mile atAscot Park. His tie for 8th place in the final nationalstandings rate him far above the next bestfirst-time wearer of a white number plate. He is a comprehensive rider who rode welland finished high in every type of eventoffered this year, national or not.He did not win a national title in his firstattempt, but came close enough to give histwo sponsors, Bob Hansen and Gary Bray, added effort next season. Haaby shouldgreatly improve his 8th place finish in thenational bracket next season, and win acouple of nationals along the way.RIDER OF THE YEAR: HARLEY-DAVIDSONBART MARKEL FLINT, MICHIGANBart was also the selection for this honorCYCLE M AGAZINENATIONAL ALL-STARS7th Annual Racingby Roxy RockwoodEditorial Staff....Team Selectionj and the CycleAnother season—perhaps the best ever—has come to a close, Eighteen nationalevents and dozens of non-national raceswere held all over the nation this past year.Eleven riders will find their names inracing history books, which is one of thehighest tributes that can be paid to a cham-pion. Four of the country’s top riders wonnational events on more than just one typeof track. Four more won races in eventswhere they are classed as specialists.Once again in selecting the National Rac-ing Team, prime consideration was given tothe national- events as this is where the bestriders continue to meet and match abilityand equipment. Though those races con-tinue to share much of the national spot-light and newspaper space, not to be for-gotten are the many riders who, for onereason or another, cannot take or find thetime to compete on the national trail thatin 1962 when he won his first Grand Na-tional AMA title. His efforts in 1965 farsurpass anything he has done in previousyears. After deciding to retire at the endof the 1964 season, Markel pushed himselfto new heights in racing. He won threenational events in ’65, and lost three moreon the final lap in national racing.Bart has developed into one of the great-est all-around riders in AMA history. Hewon two half-mile nationals and one TTnational. He finished in the top five placesno less than a record-breaking twelve times. He is considered the best in dirt trackracing in the Midwest and the East wherehe is near unbeatable on any given day atany track.Bart’s three-way winning combination ofhis ability, his mechanic and his sponsorrate him as the best there is for 1965. Muchcredit goes to his tuner Eddie Warren whoentered race after race with no mechanicalfailures of any type—a record in itself.Behind the scenes is sponsor Bert Cum-mings whose strong faith in Markel has tobe a factor in Bart’s climb to the top.1Fleads to nationwide fame. Non-nationalcompetition is the backbone of the racingstructure. Here is where the various cham-pions learn their trade, experiment withtheir equipment and develop their “name.”The National Racing Team continues tobe the only post-season honors the variouschampions receive each vear. Once again itwill be the pleasure of Floyd Clymer andCycle Magazine to present National Rac-ing Team jacket awards at the DaytonaBeach, Florida national championship roadrace in March of 1966 to the various riderswho make up the ’65 team. For all-around ability, the 1965 team farsurpasses any we have selected in the past, and could well be the strongest ever picked. The riders who were first across the finishline had many potential winners behindthem in every big event. The choices werenot easy to make by any means.(Photos of some riders unavailable)HALF MILE RIDERS:SAMMY TANNERBSALONG BEACH, CALIFORNIAMore half-mile events are run each yearthan any other type of racing. To selecteven two riders is narrowing the field to agreat extent. We feel that this year’s selec-tion comes as close as possible with twoof the finest to ever turn a throttle.Sammy Tanner once again enjoyed agreat season with well over 40 wins on thehalf-mile and his third 8-mile national title. The colorful “Flying Flea” completed his10th year of racing again at the top of thelist. All of his victories came at the highlycompetitive Ascot Park half-mile wherecompetition was rated the strongest everthis season. In ten years of racing. Tannernow has just under 300 wins on half miletracks. His bigeffort came against all of the best whenhe won the national short-track title atSanta Fe Park near Chicago in August. Itwas Nixon all the way in this one for aGEORGE ROEDERHARLEY-DAVIDSONMONROEVILLE, OHIOwhere close to that output.George Roeder joins the team this yearas the other half-miler. He ended his 12thseason of competition this past year and, aspreviously, it was an outstanding one. Earlyseason mechanical troubles were overcome.George went on to win the 10-mile na-tional plus a host of non-national events togive him the award this year. Actually, thisrider could make the team on personalityalone. They threw the mold away on thisrider. As before. George was backed by oneof America’s outstanding tuners, RalphBerndt. This is another of the successfulthree-way combinations that help take cycleracing out of the backyard category.FRED NIXHARLEY-DAVIDSONLAWTON, OKLAHOMAdecisive win.Fred Nix. a comparative newcomer tobigtime racing, joins the team for the firstyear largely on the basis of taking the highpoint title at Santa Fe for weekly racingfor the entire season.Fred is a new face with versatile talentthat may find him being selected manymore times in different brackets on theNational Racing Team.
