This is an original press photo. Airplanes - Northrop (N-156F Freedom Fighter). Northrop\'s new multi-purpose N-156F Freedom Fighter slipped into one of its combat configurations this week, donning a pair of deadly Sidewinder missiles for the first time less than three weeks after making its flight debut at the Air Force Flight Test Center at Edwards Air Force Base, California. The rapid transition from first flight to weapon-carrying capability was possible due to the excellent handling characteristics demonstrated in its early flights, according to Lew Nelson, chief engineering test pilot for Northrop\'s Norair Division. In addition to Sidewinders, the N-156F can also carry a wide range of other armaments for its variety of air-to-air and air-to-ground operations. Photo measures 10 x 8.25 inches. Photo is dated 8-24-1959.
