Antique Motorcycle ClubOf America Grand Isle Meetby Louis LichvaFrom the soft purring of a Pierce Fourto the lusty bellow of a Pope ohv twin, many of the authentic sounds of yesterday\'smotorcycling were recreated at the AntiqueMotorcycle Club Meet at Grand Isle, NewYork, August 8th.Scene of the gathering was the beautifulhome and estate of Mr. and Mrs. MichelSteffen who, as hosts, served a deliciousluncheon to the enthusiasts who came tothe event.Among the various makes of motorcyclesrepresented at the meet were such almost-forgotten names as Pierce Four, PierceSingle, Riley, Pope, Racycle, Henderson,Minneapolis, Curtiss and others.Old models of active manufacturers wererepresented by BSA and Harley-Davidsonmachines shown by their proud owners. With a good stretch of private roadhandy, the owners were able to show offthe paces of their old mounts and any oldtime motorcyclist would have been delight-ed to hear the once familiar but long for-gotten sounds produced by these twowheelers of another age.Trophies were awarded as follows:BEST RESTORED: The best restoredtrophy was awarded to Jim Lucas, Elyria,Ohio for his sparkling 1912 Harley single.OLDEST MOTORCYCLE AT MEET:Awarded to Charles Emmaus and son,Peter, Streetsville, Ontario, Canada fortheir very interesting and fine running1905 Riley.BEST RUNNER: Awarded hands downto J. H. Kellog Clarke, Derby, New Yorkfor his 1909 Pierce single “sewing ma-chine.”MOTORCYCLE BROUGHT LONG-EST DISTANCE: Awarded to EmmettMoore and son, Michael, for their 1918Pope Twin.Judges of the awards were hard pressedto decide among the many well-restoredold timers. Included among the finalistswere the 1914 BSA owned and restoredby T. A. Hodgdon and son, Ted, Jr., (Mr.Hodgdon is president of BSA Incorporated,Nutley, New Jersey). The very fine PierceFour owned and restored by Michel Stef-fen and the good running Harley 2-speedtwin owned by Hal Bruce, Jr.Perhaps not generally known by modernmotorcyclists are some of the many veryclever design features to be seen on motor-cycles manufactured 30--10 or even 50 yearsago. Some mechanical features that tookthe eye of this reporter al Grand Isle:On the Emman\'s Riley — the SlurmeyArcher 3-speed rear hub — very similar inappearance and operation to the presentday bicycle gear but larger and heavier inconstruction. The Pierce single owned by Mr. Kelloggand the Steffens’ Pierce Four both featurethe unique large-diameter tubing framewhich also served as gas tank and oil tank.Pierce design appeared to be very goodand the machines run well. Shaft drive onthe Pierce Four. The Hodgdons\' 1914 BSA with its frontand rear wheel brakes, 3-speed gearbox, footboards, and other features advancedfor the time. The 61\" Pope twin owned by EmmettMoore (with a BSA Gold Star “cheater”sprocket!) featuring spring frame and ashaft-and-bevcl driven magneto. Those big. wonderfully made gas head-lights seen on many of the machines andthe small fragile looking brakes! Sloppingpower was not so important in the olddays. The Antique Motorcycle Club ofAmerica issues a regular Bulletin for mem-bers which includes a “wanted” and “forsale” section.Interested persons should contact thesecretary for membership information:Louis Lichva, secretary, 1711 HelderburgAve., Schenectady, N.
