Hagen said 1/6 that he believes \"failure of an individual part\" caused the explosion of the first United States satellite rocket. This artist drawing from files shows the details of the Vanguard. The missile is about 72-feet long, 15 inches in diameter and weighs about 22,000 pounds. The first second stages--which were destroyed in the 1976 explosion --have gimbal-mounted engines that can be tilted to alter the light in any direction. Hagen said the failure of the rocket was mechanical and not one of design. Photo measures 9 x 7.25 inches. Photo Is dated 1957. PHOTO FRONT
