Harley-Davidson Motor Company MovesMachining Operations To Butler PlantHarley-Davidson Motor Company’s B/itler plant as it exists at the present time. An additionis planned, to house the heat treating department in the near future.A NEWS RELEASE, received from theHarley-Davidson Motor Company, Mil-waukee, Wise., stating that a program tomove virtually all machining operations toits one-story Butler Plant for increased pro-duction efficiency has been announced.Gordon M. Davidson, vice-president incharge of production, said the move was ex-pected to be completed within a year. Hesaid it was part of a long-range program tocoordinate Harley-Davidson manufacturingfacilities. Harley-Davidson acquired theButler Plant on a 60 acre site in 1947 fromBorg-Warner Corp. During World War II,it had been used by the A. O. Smith Corp.,as a propeller plant.Following occupancy of the Butler Plantin 1948, the Motorcycle manufacturer hasused the factory for such manufacturingoperations as fender production, aluminummachining, and automatic machine opera-tions.Mr. Davidson said almost all machiningoperations now being housed in the com-pany’s South Plant at the Juneau Ave. site,would be moved to Butler. These would in-clude tool room, gear, lathe, milling ma-chine and grinding departments. He stressed,however, that all finishing operations, as-sembly line production and office opera-tions would remain at 3700 W. Juneau.The Engineering Department and Engineer-ing Laboratory will stay at the Main Plant.Mr. Davidson cited several advantages inthe contemplated move. He said the trendin manufacturing was to one-story plants,as compared with the six - story SouthPlant which has housed much of the com-pany’s machining operations. The movewould eliminate duplication of equipmentbetween Butler and the main plant, cutdown the time lost in access from one floorto another in the South Plant, and alleviateparking problems.\"Getting all machining operations underone roof will materially increase our oper-ating efficiency,” Davidson said.The consolidation of operation is anotherstep in the company’s plan to centralizetheir operations. In 1948, following themove of part of its production facilities toButler, the company sold its Center StreetPlant, which is now part of the Briggs &Stratton Corp, operation.The Butler Plant, according to Davidson,embraces an area of some 260,000 squarefeet. To make room for the equipment thatwill be added to the existing facilities anaddition will be built to house the heattreating department, and present depart-ments will be consolidated.12821-5403-23
