I bring to your attention The Origina RPPCPostcard -Soviet Diesel-Electric Ship \"Russia\", USSR Fleet, 1950.\"Russia\" - Soviet sea passenger ship, diesel-electric ship.
Built in 1938 in Hamburg, Germany. It was named Patria. There is a version that this ship, according to the testimony of many eyewitnesses, at one time was called \"Adolf Hitler\". It had six MAN diesel generators and two AEG propelling electric motors. On August 27, 1938, Patria embarked on its maiden voyage from Hamburg to South America (Panama and further to the west coast). Until 1940, the vessel operated in the waters washing the western part of South America.
During World War II, it was used as a floating base for the German Navy in Stettin. At the end of the war (1945), Patria was in Flensburg in northern Germany, in the Kiel Canal area, located in the British zone of occupation, where almost the entire military and merchant fleet of Germany was concentrated in advance. In this city in May 1945 was the government of Admiral Dönitz, to whom Hitler handed over power before his suicide.
On May 10, 1945, an allied control commission arrived in Flensburg: British Brigadier General Foord, American Major General Rooks, later they were joined by Soviet General Trusov. At the suggestion of Trusov, the commission settled on the Patria liner [1]. On May 23, Dönitz, Jodl and von Friedeburg were summoned aboard the motor ship Patria, where the control commission was stationed, and arrested. Admiral von Friedeburg, who received permission to return to his room, shot himself [2].
In 1945-1946 \"Patria\", captured by the British, remained with them as a military transport under the name Empire Welland [3], and while the reparation lists were being drawn up, she managed to make two flights Liverpool - New York.
