Beginning in 1907, Alfred Dunhill began selling Dunhill pipes at the tobacconist shop he owned on London’s Duke Street. Very quickly, these pipes gained the reputation of being the ‘Rolls-Royce’ of pipes due to how expertly crafted they were. Today, Dunhill is likely Britain’s most famous pipe manufacturer, and continues to produce some of the most treasured pipes a smoker can buy. This particular Dunhill will appeal to collectors as well as lovers of well made smoking machines. It is a patent era (1949) straight prince shape (FET). The nomenclature though a little faint, reads: A or R (very faint) IN ENGLAND 9 (9 is underlined) FET PAT N° 417574/34 F/T The pipe is in remarkable condition for its age. The one thing that we must point out is that it has a dark spot on the underside of the bowl. However, after close inspection of the chamber and the bowl exterior, it has been deduced that this is not from a burnout, and is instead likely from the pipe having been inadvertently rested on something hot, such as an ash pile in an ashtray.
