British flyers have \"rice patrol\" for hungry Malayans. The years of the Japanese \"locust\" have left Malaya short of rice - \"staff of life of the east\" - and provided a feeding problem for the liberating British. Inland are villages and towns inaccessible to heavy road transport. To these a \"rice patrol\" is flown by Sunderland flying-boat pilots of the Royal Air Force. Such an area is the small town of Kuantan and its surrounding villages, homes of 40,000 people. It\'s \"landing strip\" is a half-mile long stretch of water, made more difficult by shallows, circling hills and tall trees, keeping the pilot a 100 feet in the air until he \"flops\", praying he will not hit a sunken Japanese boat of floating forest debris. The British have provided each person with a ration book, stamping it when the 3 lb.-per week issue is drawn. This amount is half Malayans normally eat, and while efforts are made to restore the full quota, the natives do their best to alleviate their loss with locally provided fruit and fish. Picture shows: On the backs of natives, the rice is carried through the town.Photo measures 10 x 8 inches. Photo is dated 10--1945.  PHOTO FRONT
