This sale is for a local find of a letter that may have beenwritten in 1944 byVienna’s avant-garde Art Historians Hans and Erica Tietze-Hans Tietze and Erica Tietze-Conrat.The letter in on their Letterhead and is signedHans Erica Tietze. Look at the note closely and see if it will work in your collection. Sold as is with no returns.In 1939 they sold their Oskar Kokoschka, Hans Tietze and Erica Tietze-Conrat 1909 painting to the New York, Museum of Modern Art. They may have lived on the uppere east side at 440 East 78th Street, New York, NY. The note is to a Mr Otto G. and Wilma Winternitz. There is some color change on the back of the envelop.Erica Conrat came from a prominentJewishfamily in Vienna, which had converted toProtestantism. She was the youngest of three sisters, and the oldest, Ilse Conrat was a sculptor. The father Hugo Conrat (also known as Hugo Cohn) was an avid music lover and friends ofJohannes Brahms. Erica was highly musical, played the piano and was among others friends withAlexander von ZemlinskyandArnold Schoenberg, through which they metKarl Kraus. They also shared a long-standing friendship withAlma Mahler.Erica Conrat studied art history at the University of Vienna from 1902 until 1905 underFranz Wickhoffand Alois Riegl and in 1905 received her doctorate with dissertation contributions to the history ofGeorg Raphael Donner. She was the first woman who completed the study of art history at the University of Vienna with a doctorate.In the same year Erica married fellow studentHans Tietze, he was also studying art history during the same time. This was the first "Vienna School" art history program.Europe lacked significant teaching positions for women at the time, so frequently Erica would assist her husband in research and eventually they became a research team.Between 1908 and 1910 the Tietzes had four children.Erica and Hans Tietze were friends with many contemporary artists includingOskar Kokoschkawho was commissioned to paint them in 1909, the portrait is now at the Museum of Modern Art in New York. The sculptor Georg Ehrlich created two bronze busts of Hans and Erica Tietze which are now in the Österreichische Galerie Belvedere in Vienna, as well as numerous portrait drawings of Erica Tietze.In 1938 the couple emigrated to the U.S. for political reasons duringWorld War II, Erica Tietze worked as a researcher, academic lecturer atColumbia Universityand published art historical publications on Renaissance artists as well as contemporary Vienna artists until her death.In 1970, a room at the Austrian Museum of Baroque Art was named in Erica Tietze-Conrat’s honor for her contributions to the study of Austrian artists.In the fall of 2004 theInternational Hans Tietze and Erica Tietze-Conrat societyfounded in Vienna, which has taken the care of the complete works of art historian-married couple to the task.The son of the couple is the turcologistAndreas Tietze.
