1941 RPPC Wreck of Oil Tanker Emidio Torpedoed by Japs WWII Crescent City CA Original vintage postcard - unposted “Wreck of Oil Tanker Emidio Torpedoed by Japs 20 Miles off Shore on Dec 17, 1941 and drifted Whaler Island in Bay, Crescent City, California” From the web: Hammacwas a steam tank ship built in 1920–1921 byBethlehem Shipbuilding CorporationofAlamedafor theUnited States Shipping Boardas part of the wartime shipbuilding program of theEmergency Fleet Corporation(EFC) to restore the nation\'s Merchant Marine. Early in 1923 the vessel together with two other tankers was sold toGeneral Petroleum Corporationand renamedEmidio. The tanker spent the vast majority of her career carrying oil along the West Coast of the United States as well as between West and East coast. In December 1941 she was shelled and damaged by theJapanese submarineI-17and eventually wrecked with a loss of five crewmen. · The remainder of the hull is still in the harbor and is marked by acommemorative plaque.
