Quart milk bottle from R.L. Sumner of South Attleboro,Massachusetts, circa 1920s to 1930s. The emossed text on the front of thebottle, set inside a circle, reads R.L. Sumner, Registered. The text above thecircle reads One Quart Liquid, and there’s a small circle on the shoulder abovewith embossed text Mass L Seal. On the back shoulder, there’s a similar blankcircle. The embossed text on the heel reads Registered Sealed. There’s also alarge S on the bottom. I believe this bottle is from the dairy that belonged toRaymond L. Sumner (1895-1954) and/or Robert L. Sumner (1891-1957). Their father,Wilbur Sumner, gave his occupation as Farmer Dairy Farm in 1920. Robert livednext door with his wife and child and gave the same occupation. Raymond wasstill living with their father and gave his occupation as Driver Milk Team. Robertwas a farmer in Wrentham in 1930, and Raymond was living with his wife andchildren on Read Street in Attleboro and gave his occupation as Milk ManPrivate Retail Business. He was living next to his father. In the 1940 and 1950census schedules, the two brothers lived next to each other—Raymond was a MilkMan and Robert a Farmer in 1940. There were still on Read Street in 1950—Raymondwas Owner Dairy Farm and Robert was Manager Dairy Farm. Raymond seems to be thelead figure in the dairy business. A later pyro bottle gives the location asSouth Attleboro. Raymond L. Sumner’s obituary, however, says that he ran adairy business out of Pawtucket for 42 years. The bottle is in good dugcondition with some haze inside, some scratching and minor dings, and a bit ofsoiling. A nice South Attleboro MA milk bottle!
