DESCRIPTION: \"ONE QUART LIQUID / ROUNTREE DAIRY / SUFFOLK, VA. / REGISTERED\"; [opposite along heel ] \"SEALED\". Embossed \"L52\" along heel. This is a SCARCE to RARE quart milk bottle fromSuffolk, Virginia! Measures 9-1/2\" high. Name ofdairy and location are embossed in a slug plate on one side. \"0\" embossed on bottom at center. The Rountree Dairy was located along the Nansemond River on the Rountree farm, situated approximately 3.5 miles from Suffolk, where it sold milk as early as 1935. In 1943, the Milk Commission in effect during World War II screwed the Rountree family by denying them a license to sell their milk in Suffolk. In 1946, the Virginia Supreme Court in Rountree v. State Milk Comm., 184 Va. 777, uncovered that conflicts of interest-- due in part to local influence from the Commonwealth\'s Attorney for Nansemond County and the Nansemond County Circuit Court Clerk --were at work when the Milk Commission denied the license and instead gave exclusive milk distribution rights to the Nansemond Cooperative and its successor, Greenfield Dairy. The Virginia Supreme Court overruled the Milk Commission and ordered that Rountree Dairy receive a distribution license. Folks, nothing changes in Surprising Suffolk! We discovered this bottle among the contents of an estate in northeastern North Carolina. A great addition to your milk bottle collection!
