As can be seen in gold letters on the front of this 1930s photo album, Elaine Earley was the owner of it and probably the author of the captions below the snapshots. We did a quick search to see if we could learn anything about Ms. Earley and found her obituary from 2015. We confirmed that she is the one in the photos because the obituary says she was born on September 10, 1920. Some of the first photos in the album are of a birthday party for Elaine on that date in 1927.
There are 205 black and white snapshots in the album, almost all captioned in white pencil on black construction paper. There are many blank pages at the back of the album. Several pages have pulled away from the binding but are in order in the album.
Jumping past birthday, Easter and other holiday photos of Elaine as a young girl starting in 1927, we come to travel photos, of which there are many in this book.
Although Elaine settled in Oregon eventually, only a few pages have visits to that area. One page dated 1929 shows them posing by an antique car, behind them a street scene in Toledo, Oregon and another in Newport, Oregon.
Yosemite follows in 1930. Great shots of the Yosemite Valley, wildlife, the Falls.
The best part of the album is the cruise to Alaska in 1930. The family sailed on the S.S. Prince Henry and there are some shots of the ship included. There are 36 photos of Alaska.
There are at least five full pages of photos of the Taku Glacier taken from aboard ship. Until recently, the Taku Glacier was thought to be withstanding the effects of climate change, but now they are saying that it is retreating. These are great photos of how it looked in 1930.
Also included are photos taken of the Lake Bennett-Skagway train, views from Lake Bennett, a view of Wrangell, Alaska, totem pole at Prince Rupert, B.C. etc.
The Alaska photos are followed by two photos of The Southern Cross airplane taken at Santa Maria, CA.
More vacation shots at the Grand Canyon, AZ, visiting relatives at Del Mar, CA, lots of photos of \"Snoopy,\" their dog, possibly a Cairn Terrier, snow in Pasadena on January 15, 1932, at the snow at Mt. Wilson, a trip to Carmel, CA where they stayed at the famous Carmel Highlands Inn, photos at Emerald Bay, Lake Tahoe, CA in 1933, a 1934 vacation to Sequoia, and a 1936 trip to Zion National Park.
Two pages have envelopes glued to them. On the left, the envelope says \"Totem Pole in Juneau.\" Inside is a common well-worn postcard of Old Witch Totem. On the right, there are two envelopes. One contains a folded piece of napkin or placemat that says \"At Lake Bennett 1898 White Pass Enroute to the Klondike Gold Fields.\" In the other envelope was a small flyer advertising the Skagway Street Car - \"A Wonderful Two-Hour Trip for 50 Cents.\"
