This real photo postcard (RPPC) is captioned "Glendale Flood Area - '28" at lower right as shown in enlargement. The card shows people in cars and boats in a flooded street that was the aftermath of a catastrophic failure of the St. Francis Dam (also known as San Francisquito Dam.) Some of the water from the broken dam made it to the Pacific Ocean, passing through many cities like Glendale and Burbank on the way. The failure of the dam after only two years of service killed over 400 people, and marked the end of the career of William Mulholland, the chief engineer of the Los Angeles Water Department and designer of the failed dam.
