1924 Vintage Press Photo.Known As The Ugliest Ship Afloat, Long Waiting For Sailing Orders.The Carnegie Institute\'s ship, \"Bowdoin,\" which has been called the ugliest ship afloat, is now resting in the Washington Channel awaiting its next trip to some distant part of the sea. The \"Bowdoin\" is constructed entirely of wood, no iron or steel being used in its construction. Reports say it will soon go another scientific voyage.Photo shows Carnegie Institute ship \"Bowdoin,\" called the ugliest ship afloat. Bowdoin is a historic schooner built in 1921 in East Boothbay, Maine, at the Hodgdon Brothers Shipyard. Designed by William H. Hand, Jr. under the direction of explorer Donald B. MacMillan, the gaff-rigged vessel is the only American schooner built specifically for Arctic exploration.
