Made for RCA by the Wireless Specialty Apparatus Company, the Radiola Special was an attempt to re-purpose (for use with newly released dry cell UV-99 tubes) several hundred Radiola Concert Crystal sets that were failing in the marketplace due to their high price and poor performance. An engraved sheet metal panel was laid over the Radiola Concert’s original hard rubber panel, the crystal detector was removed, a tube socket was added, and the panel controls were modified appropriately

Condition of this example is excellent, with a nearly perfect panel, crisp original nomenclature, and clean nickel plating on all of the fittings and small hardware. The case is clean, with glossy original enamel that exhibits only minimal wear and crazing. The tube socket is straight, the tube deck is not warped or otherwise compromised, and the bakelite frame of the variometer (the Achilles Heel of the Radiola Special) is not broken. As is typical for this radio, there is no front cover, but the lid is original, and it still slides easily back and forth.

The UV-99 tube has a good filament but weak emissions, and the radio is being offered for historical and/or collecting purposes only, with no other assurances expressed or implied.
