These Contribution Stamps were issued and sold circa 1920s - 1930s (at 1 cent a piece) to raise funds and support for the legal defense of Tom Mooney, appeals of his conviction and requests for a pardon - clemency from the Governor of California.

ThomasJoseph \"Tom\" Mooney (December 8, 1882– March 6, 1942) was an Americanpolitical activist and labor leader, who was convicted with Warren K.Billings of the San Francisco Preparedness Day Bombing of 1916. He was wrongly convicted of a crime he did notcommit, Mooney served 22 years in prisonbefore finally being pardoned in 1939 by liberal Democratic Govenor Culbert Olson.

TheSunday after his release, hewalked in a parade up Market Streetfrom the Embarcadero to the San Francisco Civic Center, accompanied by an honorguard of one hundred husky longshoremen with their hooks, led by Mooney\'s ownunion, Local 164 of the International Molders\' Union, in the vanguard.

Nopolice or politicians were invited; bosses of the big unions were unwelcome andstayed away. Mooney thumbed his nose atthe Hearst building at Third and Market, a gesture against the local presseditors who hadrailed against him for decades.
