1920 PHOTO Santa CLAUS & Son w WWI VETS by REO SPEEDWAGON Garage COLUMBUS OH?:
$149.99

Framed photograph of Santa Claus & Son with theirREO Speedwagon filled with gift baskets along with a group of World War Iveterans, on a city street, possibly in Ohio, circa 1920. No photographer orpublisher identified. The photograph is a card mounted silver gelatin print, recently framed. I have not taken it out of the frame and do not know if thereis any information on the back. It’s a really great image. It has the Christmastheme, with a cigar chomping Santa Claus and his androgynous, moody soon. They’re standing by the tail gate of an early automobile delivery truck, andthere’s a crudely painted sheet hanging on the bed side that reads: Santa Claus& Son, Inc., Special Delivery for Post One, American Legion, They now use aREO Speedwagon instead of a sleigh. But take a look at the tough guys with thetrench coats and fedoras at right. I wouldn’t mess with them—they look freshlyback from the war. The REO Speedwagon may belong in the Union Motor SalesGarage, located in the building just behind the group. Note the other citybuildings. I couldn’t pin down the garage but think it may have been inColumbus, Ohio. The truck is a good fit for a 1920 REO Speedwagon. The AmericanLegion was formed at the end of World War I hand had its first posts in themajor cities of the states, spreading quickly to the smaller towns. I thinkthis photograph dates to the first couple of years of the American Legion, perhaps as early as 1919 or 1920. The outside of the frame measures 10 ¾” by 12¾”, the photograph is 6” by 8”. The photograph is in good to very goodcondition. The mount has a break in it, done before or during the framing.Otherwise, it is free of significant flaws. The photograph exhibits very goodtonal range and shows very good detail. A fantastic World War I veteransChristmas related image with early truck and automobile history overtones!
