1917 Winston Churchill Tobacco Card C24 Imperial Tobacco Canada ITC Pre WW2:

This scarcecard is one in a series of 24 cards issued in Canada bythe Imperial Tobacco Co. of Canada Tobacco. One card was insertedwith their brand of Cigarettes during 1917. The Series is entitled“NOTABILITIES” and is listed inBurdick’s American Card Catalogue as series C24. Each card depicts an image of a type of aprominent person. For the Most part theyare British and usually involvedwith the Military and WW1 in particular (which was underway at the time ofissue) The front features a black andwhite portrait style photographic image of the features person with the words“Passed for Publication by the PressBureau, London 11/1/17” emblazonedacross the top of the card (I believe that was the British Wartime Censor forWorld War One). The back features abrief biography of the featuredpersonage, again it is noted that ishas been passed by the Press Bureau. This card is number 6 in the series andfeatures A VERY YOUNG LOOKING WINSTONCHURCHILL . The card actually refersto him as Major W.L.S. Churchill and makes reference to the fact that he “HasTaken an active part in the present war” which as I mentioned earlier would have been World War One. Thiscard is a great historical document of a man that in a few years after thiscard was issued, destiny. wouldplace him as one of the most important historical figures of the 20thcentury. The card measures 2 11/16 inches by 1 3/8inches approximately. The card has some corner and edge wear, and surface markin the form of a line just above his head, it also is a bit off centre. Still it is such a great early image, I thinkit diplays very nicely. I have scanned the card front and back fairly large for you tobe able to judge condition for yourself.This has huge crossover collectablepotential. Although I am not100% sure if this is theearliest card featuring a photographic image on Winston Churchill ever issued, it certainly must be one of earliest. Wereelse could you get such a nice early Image of a Youthful Winston of this ageand scarcity, this in-expensive? THESE CARDS WERE NEVER ISSUED IN THE U.S.and are a tough find. Due to the lower population in Canada than inthe US, print runs in Canada were muchsmaller compared with AmericanCards. Because of this the majority of all Canadian non sports cards are farscarcer than card issued in the USAand UK.
