Interesting History on Caracross:

Caribou Crossing was a fishing and hunting camp for InlandTlingitandTagishpeople.

A very small town . . . the village of Carcross was originally named Caribou Crossing by miners who had reached this junction point of the Tagish and Bennett lakes en route to the Klondike gold fields at Dawson

Originally known asNaataase Heen(Tagishfor ‘water running through the narrows’),Caribou Crossing was named after the migration of huge numbers ofcaribouacross the natural land bridge between Lake Bennett and Nares Lake.

That caribou herd was decimated during theKlondike Gold Rush.

The modern village began in 1896, during the Klondike Gold Rush. At the time, Caribou Crossing was a popular stopping place for prospectors going to and from the gold fields ofDawson City.

Caribou Crossing was also a station for theRoyal Mailand the Dominion Telegraph Line, and it served as a communications point on theYukon River.

In 1904, Caribou Crossing was renamed Carcross

Twice a year large herds of caribou migrated across the easily forded Nares Lake shallows east of the townsite, which was no sooner developed to serve Klondike miners than it became an important stopping point for the White Pass & Yukon Railway in September 1898.

The Caribou Hotel also opened in the same year and still in operation, Matthew Watson’s General Store is the Yukon’s oldest operating store.

When railway construction through the White Pass was completed, the final gold spike was hammered into the track here on July 29, 1900.

The original station burned down during a fire in 1910 that destroyed the station, the Caribou Hotel, a store, and most of the other buildings in downtown Carcross. The station, hotel, and store were rebuilt within a year.

QuotingSternwheelers of the Yukon, from the website of the Yukon archives:

In July of 1900 the White Pass & Yukon Route (WP&YR) railway was completed from Skagway, on the Alaskan coast, to Whitehorse, making it practical to transport freight and passengers on boats via the upper river, from Whitehorse to Dawson City.

WP&YR set up a river division, the British Yukon Navigation Company, (BYN Co.) in 1900; within three years BYN Co. owned all but three boats on the upper river.

Sternwheelers became a vital part of Yukon transportation. Yukon River sternwheelers were designed to carry heavy cargoes downstream on a light draft and make the return trip upstream with lighter loads.

Long summer days and spectacular scenery made the Yukon a popular tourist destination, and tourism became an important part of BYN Co.’s business. The S.S. Tutshi, launched as a tourist boat in 1917, took passengers on excursions on the Southern Lakes.

As an aside, in 1911 the federal government built the Chooutla Indian School that was run by the Anglican Church.
