Selling a \"Reply Post Card\" from Stanford University postmarked June 1,1900. This post card is a reply to a Dr. F. Swartzlander of Omaha, Nebraska who apparently had asked questions about fees his son would incur when he attended Stanford University. The University wrote back \"Mr. D. F. Swartzlander: My Dear Sir: The register sent herewith answers your questions. Your son will receive credit for work done in Chicago University. Fees $20 - per year. Average cost of board in Encina Hall about $23 per month with room light (electric) & steam heat. About $200 per school year.\" It is then signed by what appears to be \"David S. Jordan\" or something close to that. What is most interesting about this post card is its reference to \"Encina Hall\". This was a luxury 4-story dormitory with big halls and hot water and steam heat and it was the first men\'s dormitory on the campus. It was a very rowdy place in 1900 when this postcard was sent and much is written online about the crazy atmosphere of this dorm at this point in history. When a 1906 earthquake shook it to its core and one student died, the atmosphere apparently mellowed. But this post card predates the 1906 earthquake. Very interesting piece of history.
