Thomas Martin Aloysius BurkeKGCHS (January 10, 1840 – January 20, 1915) was anIrish-born clergyman of theCatholic Church. He served asBishop of Albanyfrom 1894 until his death in 1915. BiographyThomas Burke was born inSwinford,County Mayo, and came to theUnited Stateswith his father, a physician, in 1850, settling inUtica, New York.[1]He received his early education under theChristian Brothersin Utica, and attendedSt. Michael's CollegeinToronto, Ontario,Canada.[2]In 1856, he enteredSt. Charles CollegeinEllicott City,Maryland, where he befriended his classmateJames Gibbons.[2]He completed his theological studies atSt. Mary's SeminaryinBaltimore.[1] Burke wasordainedto thepriesthoodon June 30, 1864.[3]He then served as acurateat St. John's Church inAlbanyuntil 1865, when he succeededJohn J. Conroyaspastorof St. Joseph's Church in the same city.[1]He becamevicar generalunder BishopFrancis McNierneyin 1887, and was named aKnight of the Holy Sepulchrein 1890.[2] On May 15, 1894, Burke was appointed the fourthBishop of AlbanybyPope Leo XIII.[3]He received hisepiscopalconsecrationon the following July 1 from ArchbishopMichael Corrigan, with BishopsBernard John McQuaidandPatrick Anthony Luddenserving asco-consecrators, in theCathedral of the Immaculate Conception.[3]During his administration, he enlarged the Boys' Asylum in Albany, reduced diocesan debt, and renovated the cathedral.[4] He died in Albany at age 75.[5]
