Item for sale is a very rare antique late 1800\'s tobacco card for \"Seal of North Carolina\" Plug Cut tobacco featuring actress Flora Walsh. Card is in overall excellent shape for its age, having been kept in a family photo album for the past century. Card has 3 creases and very minor blunting at corners. Finish is still glossy.Card was one in a series of 17 cards released in 1888 by the Marburg Bros. as part of their Presidents, Statesmen and Actresses series. These cards were inserted into packs of tobacco to serve as stiffeners.
From the Willa Cather Archive: Actress Flora Walsh (c.1870-1893) was the first wife of Charles H. Hoyt. She began her theatrical career in San Francisco at an early age, playing juvenile roles with Maude Adams. She joined the road company of Hoyt\'sA Tin Soldierin 1884, and had a bit part in the New York production, where she met Hoyt, who quickly proposed. Her mother, Alice Walsh, made the two wait for two years until Flora was sixteen. Hoyt wrote the roles of the Lunch Counter Waitress inA Hole in the Groundand Bossy Brander inA Texas Steerespecially for Walsh. She died of pneumonia January 22, 1893.Measures 4\" x 2.5\"
