1887 RARE Henry Ward Beecher Bethel Brooklyn C.T. Russell Watchtower IBSA:
$49.99

Here is a 128 year old rare book from 1887 \"The Life and Work of Henry Ward Beecher\". Pastor Russell purchased the property of Henry Ward Beecher as noted in various Watchtower articles dealing with the early history of the Watchtower Society and the International Bible Students [Jehovah\'s Witnesses]. The \"Bible House\", \"Brooklyn Tabernacle\" and C.T. Russell\'s personal study was once Beecher\'s. \"Beecher Bethel\" is a term used by the early Bible Students to refer to one of these buildings. This book has some pictures of the buildings later owned by the Watchtower Society. Note in the photos I have supplied just one of the many photos we offer here on of the Beecher residence with Pastor Russell sitting at his desk. [This photo is not included in the sale of this book]. Here are just some of the many quotes from Watchtower publications : Why Called Bethel : The original headquarters of the Watch Tower Bible and Tract Society was established in the 1880’s, in Allegheny (now part of Pittsburgh), Pennsylvania. Back then, it was called the Bible House. By 1896, this facility was staffed by 12 members. With the move to Brooklyn in 1909, though, the new residence for the staff members was called Bethel. Why Bethel? The property that the Watch Tower Society purchased at 13-17 Hicks Street was owned by the prominent clergyman Henry Ward Beecher and was known as the Beecher Bethel. Beecher’s former residence, located at 124 Columbia Heights, was also purchased. The March 1, 1909, issue of The Watch Tower reported: “It certainly seems very remarkable that we should get the old Beecher Bethel and then by accident get his former residence. . . . The new home we shall call ‘Bethel,’ and the new office and auditorium, ‘The Brooklyn Tabernacle’; these names will supplant the term ‘Bible House.’”[Watchtower 2005 \"Brooklyn Bethel - 100 years of History\" pg.23,24].
\"In 1908, therefore, several representatives of the Watch Tower Society, including its legal counsel, Joseph F. Rutherford, were sent to New York City. Their objective? To secure property that C. T. Russell had located on an earlier trip. They purchased the old “Plymouth Bethel,” located at 13-17 Hicks Street, Brooklyn. It had served as a mission structure for the nearby Plymouth Congregational Church, where Henry Ward Beecher once served as pastor. The Society’s representatives also purchased Beecher’s former residence, a four-story brownstone at 124 Columbia Heights, a few blocks away. The Hicks Street building was remodeled and named the Brooklyn Tabernacle. It housed the Society’s offices and an auditorium. After considerable repairs, Beecher’s former residence at 124 Columbia Heights became the new home of the Society’s headquarters staff. What would it be called? The Watch Tower of March 1, 1909, explained: “The new home we shall call ‘Bethel’ [meaning, “House of God”].” [Proclaimers Book pg. 59].This book is in good condition for its age. {please see photos for condition}. This book is considered rare as it was only sold \"by subscription\" as noted on title page. [The photo of the Plymouth Bethel where Beecher and C.T. Russell both gave sermons is not included in this sale but can be sold separately].
