1877 - 270 lb. FISHER & NORRIS BLACKSMITH ANVIL - NO RESERVE:
$710.00

Matchlessantiques offers collectors and smiths this 270 lb. Fisher & Norris Blacksmith Anvil. The anvil is marked with the Fisher Eagle emblem (though it is mostly destroyed), and \"PATENT. APR.24.1877 FISHER\" on the front foot. No weight markings were found on this anvil, but given the actual weight of the piece is 268 lbs., it\'s safe to assume that this anvil would have been considered a \"270 lb.\" This anvil has the quality and rebound that has made Fisher a well known and liked anvil among blacksmiths nationwide.
Damaged edge. One edge has been chipped off and a crack extends along the edge of the chip. The faceplate is still tight and the damage has not compromised the rest of the face. So the price has been reduced due to the condition. Still a good sized anvil that would provide great service if you don\'t mind the edge issue.
Fisher and Norris was the first successful anvil manufacturer to exist in this country, as well as the last of the major anvil manufacturers to stop producing anvils in America. The company was founded in 1843 and produced anvils for 136 years. They produced more anvils than any other American anvil maker. Fisher became famous for perfecting the process of welding cast steel on high grade cast iron. They also were the brand of anvil the the U.S. government ordered for military purposes. According to Richard Postman\'s book, Anvils In America, Fisher claimed that \"One blow on a \"Fisher\" anvil is worth two on any other anvil made\". They went on to say that, \"The Face Consists of a Single Piece of the Very Best Cast Steel Perfectly Welded of the Hardest Temper. The horn is made of Tough Untempered Steel and will neither Break or Bend. All \"Eagle\" Anvils made with the Latest Fisher Patent Double Thick Steel on Both Edges of the Face.\" There anvils received the nickname \"Old Reliable\" because of their reliability.
NOTE: This sale is for the 270 lb. Fisher & Norris AnvilONLY. The wooden cart it\'s sitting on and other tools in the background ARE NOT INCLUDED in this sale.
