Important piece of historical memorabilia relating to the Great Chicago fire of 18712 3/4 x4 3/8 inches
An affidavit to certify that all the metal from the Chicago court house bell was sold to the Fidelity Safe Depository
Notarized with a city stamp and signatures from members of the board of public works, central image of a bellreads as follows....."this is to certify that at a public sale on the 16th day of December 1871 all of the metal of the court house bell in possession of the city, was sold to Thomas B. Bryan of Fidelity Safe Depository". Thomas Bryan in turn wrote, "this will certify that except the portion reserved by me for an alarm bell for this institution, all the metal of the Chicago court house bell purchased by me at the sale ordered by the board of public works has this day been sold and delivered to you. Your statements concerning it may be relied upon as being fully as genuine as the metal is known to be to".
Apparently Bryan went on to sellthe rest of the metal to H.S. Everhart & Co who in turn recast it into several commemorative souvenirs, including small replicas of the original bell
When the fire started the night of October 8th, the Court House bell sounded the alarm until the building caught fire, causing the bell to crash into the ground and shatter. The Court House and its bell had been the pride of the young city, so when the flames died out, businesses like Everhart & Co. capitalized on the popularity of the bell pieces as souvenirs.
In very good overall condition, quite sound, folds barely starting. to split
