"The photographer Joseph Kidder Bundy was born on 30 May 1811 in New Hampshire. On 6 June 1835 he married Miriam Fessender (4 January 1812 - 4 March 1892). In 1840 he was living in Templeton, Worcester, Massachusetts. The first reference to him as a photographer was in an 1844 Worcester directory in which he was a daguerreotype artist at Waldo Block. In the 1850 census he was in Southbridge, Worcester, Massachusetts with the occupation of daguerrean; he and Miriam had two children--Joseph (1838-1853) and Ellen--and his sister Mary (born circa 1816) living with them. It is not known exactly when he came to New Haven, Connecticut, but an 1860 directory lists him in partnership as “Bundy, William, & Hart New Haven Gallery of Photographic Art at 311 Chapel Street. In add for the establishment, it was noted that M Moulthrop, long and favorably known as the leading photographist of New Haven was at all times to be found in the gallery, happy to wait upon his numerous friends. He name did not appear in any previous directories. In 1862 he paid $25.00 for a Class B license and from 1863-1866 he renewed the Class B license. Bundy & Williams appears to have been a success, as in September and October 1866 they had a reported income of $1,258. Bundy remained in New Haven until his death on 31 October 1896. In New Haven directories, the following were listed as locations for Joseph K. Bundy, photographer:
1860 - Bundy, Williams, & Hart, 311 Chapel Street
1867 - Bundy & Williams, 314 and 326 Chapel Street
1868 - Bundy & Williams, 326 Chapel; an ad in this directory noted that the two closed their gallery at 314 Chapel; they also note that having been in the business for over 22 years, they have the experience necessary to produce quality pictures, as well as stereoscopic photos of outdoor scenes around New Haven.
1869 - 1879 - Bundy only was at 326 Chapel Street
1880 - Bundy only at 297 Chapel Street
1881 - 1885 - Bundy & I.H. Stoddard, 320 Chapel Street
1886 - Bundy & Stoddard, 838 Chapel Street
1888 - 1893 - Bundy & Myron W. Filley, 838 Chapel Street
1894 - Bundy has no occupation listed"
