George H. Bean, who was born on 7 Nov. 1838 in England and worked as a blacksmith prior to the outbreak of the Civil War, enlisted in the Union Army for a three-year term of service at Central City, CO, on 17 Sept. 1862. He was mustered in as a Private in Co. D, 3rd Colorado Infantry. He was promoted to sergeant on 1 Mar. 1863. After his unit was merged with the 2nd Colorado Infantry, Bean became a sergeant in Company L, 2nd Colorado Cavalry, on 15 Jan. 1864 in Denver, CO. In Jan. 1864, Bean was on daily duty as an assistant quartermaster sergeant. He was discharged from the 2nd CO Cav. 15 Mar. 1864 by reason of his transfer to the 68th U.S. Colored Infantry. On 17 Mar. 1864, he was mustered in at Benton Barracks, MO, as a 1st Lieutenant in Co. A, 68th USCI, also known as the 4th Missouri Colored Infantry. He was promoted to Captain, Co. A, 68th USCI on 22 Oct. 1865 at Alexandria, VA. He was mustered out of the Union Army on 5 Feb. 1866. Bean died on 2 Oct. 1894 and is buried in Greenwood Cemetery in Grand Rapids, Michigan.
