Originalfull-pageantique 1862 woodblock engraving illustrating the exchange of Union andConfederateprisoners at Edenton and Elizabeth City during the Civil War. - The image areameasures a generous35.5 x 23.4 cm [14\" x 9¼\"], on a larger sheet published in the March 15, 1862edition of exchanges were a common practice during the early years of the war, but broke down in 1863 when the South refusedto recognize captured Black soldiers as prisoners of war and used them as slaves.
- Also shown in the engraving are St. Paul\'s Church in Edenton,the Belvidere Fishery, and boats in the harbor at Elizabeth City, chiefly from sketches by Angelo Wiser.
