Carte de visite photograph, c. 1863. Imprint of Wm. Oldroyd, Columbus, Ohio. Titled, \"Prisoners in the Ohio Penitentiary on Their Way to Dinner.\" The convicts wear stripes while overseen by an imposing prison guard in top hat and great coat. Light age toning and somewhat low contrast, but image is very clear and detailed.
Another, unmarked CDV of the same prison soldrecently, and the seller said there is speculation these are Confederate prisoners of war. I am not aware of state prisons being used to house captured soldiers, but it\'s certainly possible. A rare and compelling CDV either way.
