“The New Indian Mail
Steam-Ship London News
1856This is the cover sheet only, from the August 16, 1856, issue of The Illustrated London News. It is over 165 years old. The page measures 11x16 inches in size, and is in excellent and very attractive condition, presenting an appealing nautical view. The top half of this title page carries the paper\'s masthead and an article on British politics. The bottom half presents the naval vessel\'s portrait, in the form of a fine woodcut engraving of the steamship England, being propelled along through the sea by an impressive set of billowing sails. On the reverse side of the page is a related article about the engraving, consisting of 55 lines of text in small print. It says, in part::“Under the influence and energy of Mr. W.S. Lindsay, M.P. for Teignmouth, the eminent shipowner, Dartmouth has become the departure port for vessels containing her Majesty\'s mails between this country, the Cape, and our possessions in India. . . .
“. . . the England, the first vessel of this new line, left Dartmouth at 10 a.m., on the 6th inst., having besides other passengers, 400 troops on board for the Cape of Good Hope, with a six-pounder field battery, and 100 non-commissioned officers and men of the 80th Regiment . . . She is 250 feet long, 33 feet beam, and 20 feet depth of hold. . . . engines of 150-horse-power . . . with a consumption of fourteen tons of coal in twenty-four hours. Her speed under sail is 15 knots per-hour, and under steam 9-1/2 knorts. She has space for 1300 tons of cargo, 180 tons of coal, and accomodations for fifty cabin passengers.
“The engines are on the most improved principle. . . . Her construction combines every improvement which science and experience have added to the art of shipbuilding. She is also fitted with Cunningham\'s patent topsails, an inventions which is justly becoming appreciated. . . .
“Mr. Lindsay arrived at Dartmouth . . . and met with a very enthusiastic reception. A four-oared gig was sent to Totnes to bring him down the river, and on his arrival the bells rang merrily.” Etc., etc._gsrx_vers_1651 (GS 9.7.3 (1651))
