1787 HOPKINTON, NEW HAMPSHIRE LAND DEED
OLIVER DOW HOMESTEAD to ELIPHALET POOR
** BOTH REVOLUTIONARY WAR SOLDIERS **This 18th century deed concerns the transfer of land from Oliver Dow and wife Hannah of Hopkinton in the County of Hillsborough and State of New Hampshire, gentleman, to Eliphalet Poor of Hampstead in the County of Rockingham, and State of New Hampshire, Esquire. Hopkinton was incorporated in 1765 by Benning Wentworth and for a while was considered the capital of the state until it changed in favor of nearby Concord. It continued to be a popular passenger rail line between Boston and Montreal and had prosperous properties. The land transfer in this deed involved one hundred and thirty acres with boundaries of the Contoocook River, by Simeon Dow, Thomas Currier, Jerediah Pattee, Caleb Burbank, David Fowler, excepting the fulling mill on the side of a sawmill. Poor paid Dow a total of three hundred and sixty pounds legal money for property that represented the Dow homestead. At that time, New Hampshire\'s continental exchange rate for the previous colonial money was 6 cents per 12 shillings. Oliver Dow and his wife Hannah signed the deed 10 April 1787. It was witnessed by Jacob Brown and John Calfe and was also acknowledged by Calfe as JP. The deed was received 6 April 1790 and recorded into Hillsborough County Records 25 September 1790 by Jonathan Smith Jr. Register. It is always fun to know who these people are. Oliver Dow (1736-1824) was born in Salem, New Hampshire and married in 1757 Hannah Pattee (1737-1820) who was born in Haverhill, Massachusetts . DAR records show that he was a lieutenant by 1776 and fought at Crown Point and Ticonderoga. According to the Centennial History of Waterville, Kennebec County, Maine, Dow moved from Salem to Hopkinton in 1773, then back to Salem circa 1790 where he lived until 1820 when his wife died. At that time, he removed to Waterville, Maine with his son and is buried there in Memorial Park there.Eliphalet Poor (1747-1827) was born in Rowley, Massachusetts. He married in Salem, Massachusetts Elizabeth Little (1752-1801) in 1769. Eliphalet served in Capt Hezekiah Hutching\'s march from Hampstead as part of the Northern Army to Saratoga. He also served as a selectman from Hampstead. The Poors moved around. Several children were born 1792-1796 to Eliphalet and his wife in Hopkinton, but by 1800 he was in Candia, in 1810 in Exeter and in 1820 back in Hopkinton with daughter Sarah. Eliphalet died there in 1827, and Find-a-Grave assumes he is buried in the Poor lot with other family members, but the stone is missing.
The deed is a pretty one with dark and clear text and bright red wax seals. There are fold lines and a few minor pinholes, but no separation. The toning is minimal for a deed of this age and in terrific condition. It will be folded and shipped first class along an existing fold. I will be listing more 18th and 19th century Maine and New Hampshire deeds and will always be happy to combine shipping when I can. Thank you.
