1778 Hessian Blood Dollar Hesse-Cassel Taler: $595.00
American Revolution 1778 Hessian Blood Dollar Taler This is a very scarce coin dated 1778 from Hesse-Cassel. It is sometimes known as \"blood taler\" and \"blood dollar.\" Hard to get dollar sized coin weighing about 23.36g. This one is a good honest piece that grades VF or so with usual crudeness and mint-made adjustment marks as commonly found. This filing was done to reduce overweight coins before circulation. That\'s not a defect and done by design. Getting very difficult to locate these coins! Interesting obverse die buckling at 12:30 o\'clock position. Early die failure is one of the reasons why only a limited number of these coins were struck. Dolnick writes an interesting 11 page paper on this subject matter in the June 1958 issue of The Numismatist (see photo...not a part of this sale, neither is the photo of Frederick II).
