This very special sword comes with documents and has sat in a collection and was studied in depth. These documents include handwritten French descriptions and handwritten diagrams as well as a multitude of other references.

The descriptions state that the sword was used for Ceremonial use, the blade bearing many engraving matching swords belonging to high ranking officers of the French Cavalry or Dragoons.
The research undertaken many years back shows the item was sold at sale and is listed as a ceremonial sword. The study seems to point at the sword possibly having belonged to a member of the French Nobility. The study also points to the hilt dated at the 16th and 17th century and the blade dated the 17th century.
Further investigation points strongly to the sword having belonged toCharles de Valois, Duke of Angoulême, whowas an illegitimate son of Charles IX of France and Marie Touchet.Charles de Valois was carefully educated and was inducted into the Knights of Malta. In 1588, he attained one of the highest dignities of the order, being made Grand Prior of France.Further informationon his life can be found defining link that can be found is his coat of Arms that is engraved on the blade and matches the dukes perfectly.An Image of his Coat of arms can be viewed interesting sword 16th -17th century sword is very unusual, while it has the characteristics of similar sword from the period it is not a crab hilt or infantry sword as it is significantly longer and stronger blade.While they claim the sword is for ceremonial use it is more likely the sword was used in combat as the characteristics and stresses on the blade tell a different story. This does not mean that the sword was not later used for Ceremonial duties as it was of importance.
The hilt is in excellent condition and original without any play present. The guard is fitted with a unique curved quillon that spiral inwards. The side ring is facetted, and the studded rounded pommel makes an excellent counterbalance. The grip is an iron wire wrap with a leather wrap, which is another indication that it was used for combat or to protect it. Beneath the leather the wire wrap is in excellent shape.
The blade is in good condition with extensive signs of use. Blade is heavily engraved with multiple designs on either side. A tapering double edge design is a heavy-duty fighting blade that shows this sword has seen extensive use due to multiple stress fractures throughout the blade but these due not diminish the structure or integrity of the blade.The blade engraving include the Fleur de Lys, the Oriflamme flag, the Knight of Malta cross and the crown. The remanenceof gold gilding the the groves is also present.
