Lineage: Yajiro Master: Fukutaro Niiyama Disciples: None Biography: Fukuo Niiyama was born on June 19, 1922, in Yajiro, Fukuoka Village, Miyagi Prefecture, as the eldest son of Fukutaro Niiyama, a woodturner. He graduated from Fukuoka Elementary School in March 1935 and immediately began his woodturning apprenticeship under his father. In 1937, Yukio Koseki became Fukutaro’s apprentice, making him Fukuo’s fellow disciple. From around 1938, Fukuo and his father actively produced kokeshi dolls and toys. In December 1941, Fukuo was drafted and sent to Manchuria. He returned in June 1947 and resumed his woodturning work. He was introduced as a kokeshi artist in the magazine Koh but was first featured with a photograph in Kokeshi, People, and Localities. Starting in 1951, his younger brother Keiji also began woodturning but changed careers around 1954. Fukuo\'s father, Fukutaro, passed away in 1965. During the kokeshi boom of the late 1960s and 1970s, Fukuo, along with his brothers Kushi and Sakyo, played a central role in supporting Yajiro kokeshi. They frequently participated in events at department stores in Tokyo, delighting enthusiasts in the capital. Fukuo Niiyama passed away on December 11, 1987, at the age of 66.
