ITEM: Very rare set of (11) vintage photos taken in 1898 by Mr. AMOS GUY BROWN. This listing also includes a signature/autograph book that belonged to one of his daughters ARTHELDA BROWN. Amos came from Pennsylvania and went to Missouri, then Oregon City, Oregon. Then, he made his way down to Selma, California.

FIRST SIDE: All the photos are taken in the foothills of the Sierras near the Millerton Lake area in Fresno County, California. First is a 5x7 size super clear image of a dam along the San Joaquin River that is not listed online. It looks like the writing reads "ORTIO'S or ORLIO'S DAM on the San Joaquin River." To the right of that is a photo showing what Amos titled "BIG BEND SAN JOAQUIN RIVER "

At bottom left, a large work wagon makes its way up a dirt road with two cows trailing behind. Amos labeled this "ROUNDING MULESHOE CURVE 9-29-98" We are so glad he put that one date, so we know exactly when these were taken. To the right of that is Amos with hìs granddaughter. Lastly, there is an interesting photo of a makeshift dam near Millerton that looks to be under construction when this photo was taken. The San Joaquin River is one of the most heavily damned rivers in California.

SECOND SIDE: At top left is a photo of Amos Brown with a baby girl, (probably a granddaughter) in a horse and buggy in Selma, California. To the right of that is a 5x7 photo taken of the mountains in Truckee, California. Amos really got around. This is the only photo of Truckee. It was at an elevation of 8500 ft he wrote. There are two buildings off to the right that look like part of a lumber operation. Amos was a farmer, but he also invested in lumber.

Next there is a photo of the farm property in Selma. Under this photo is a small picture of Amos Brown and his wife SARAHJ. BROWN. To the right is a photo of an old lady who is not identified. Lastly, there is a photo of a group of Mexican or Native American children in the foothills near Clovis. I can't tell what they are doing. It looks like they are putting piles of branches together. A white woman wearing a prairie bonnet is also in the photo.

Amos and Sarah were both born in Pennsylvania. They had a daughter Arthelda Brown, daughter Winona Brown, Beulah Brown and youngest daughter Naoma Brown. They also had a son named William J. Brown and another son Homer Guy Brown who died just 3 years after these photos were taken of Malaria.

It is rare to find photos this old from Fresno County. There just were not a lot of people in this area that carried a camera with them everywhere like Mr. Brown did.
