The Amphibious Sketch is a weapon of war. The necessities of amphibious warfare have required its creation. In assisting, assault personnel to establish a beachhead on a hostile shore, it has become a tool of victory
and a new and needed addition to the field of cartography.

Amphibious Sketches in their present form were developed from studies
of the chart and map requirements of amphibious personnel during training
and in action in many major amphibious operations. Observation of the Amphibious
Sketch in use and \'post-assault interviews with the men involved
have brought out the significant fact that beach navigation and intelligence
information given to personnel must be in one compact, easy-to-use
package that can be referred to under battle conditions. Besides, this information
must cover amphibious needs as completely and accurately as possible.
Giving the sailor or soldier a great deal more information than he
needs hinders his study of that which is basic and essential. Supplying
the information in a cumbersome, operationally impractical format tends to
make him rely solely on his memory of briefing instructions.

The ideal package of. information for amphibious assault and beach battalion
personnel is a single sheet of paper covering their particular area
of operations both land and sea. Careful design and elimination of unessential
data in this one sheet are necessary to obtain the required compactness
and usability. This is what has •been attempted in the Amphibious
Sketch. Its material contributions to the success of Landings in North
Africa, Sicily, Italy, France, the Aleutians, Guam and various other Pacific
islands are a measure of its basic soundness in conception and design.

The Amphibious Sketch has been designed so that it can be drafted and
reproduced aboard ships or at bases equipped with map reproduction units.
Its design\' is such that it can be used in planning as well as executing an
assault. The story of its development, its use in amphibious training and
warfare and the technique of its preparation and production are all covered
in this manual so that amphibious planning staffs may use it in one form or
another, if they so desire. Methods are suggested by which Sketches can be
produced in. modified form in the .interest of speed to meet special
