HISTORY OF THE MASCOT:

Spuds Mackenzie Bar Promo Dog. This BUD LIGHT BULL TERRIER DOG was a limited edition. Created by Anheuser Busch in 1986 ~ Spuds was a fictional dog character for use in Advertising campaigns marketing BUD LIGHT!

Spuds first premiered in 1987 ~ As he was the star of a Bud Light Commercial during SUPER BOWL XXI. Shortly after his rise to fame, Anheuser Busch retired Spuds in 1989.

Only a total of around 2,400 dog lights were produced. Production ran from 1987 to early 1989. They were given out exclusively to bars and retailers as a promotional gift.

Bud Light first introduced a "super party animal named Spuds MacKenzie," during the Super Bowl in 1987 and the dog was an immediate hit. The Bull Terrier helped increase Bud Light sales by 20% between 1987 and 1988, The New York Times reported.

Due to backlash from organizations like Mothers Against Drunk Driving, who claimed that the use of a fun party dog would inspire underage drinking, Budweiser decided to retire the mascot in 1989.

I am the original owner. Spuds sat behind our family’s bar for 35 years. I hope the next collector enjoys him as much as we have.
